On April 9, 1917, three days after the United States entered World War I, the Jewish Welfare Board (predecessor to JCC Association) was created to serve the needs of Jews in the armed forces. After the war, JWB expanded to focus on social and recreational needs of the Jewish community as the National Association of Jewish Community Centers and YM- YWHAs.
